Sashiko: Lobed Diamond

I used light pink thread on a bright red fabric when creating this lobed-diamond design. This type of running-stitch embroidery is known as Sashiko. Sashiko originated in Japan as a way for poorer people to repair, and at the same time, embellish their garments. Sashiko embraces the philosophy of “no waste” and thriftiness.

I created several dozens of red fabric patches embroidered with tints and tones of red thread to repair a vintage quilt. The quilt is solid red and quilted with red thread. This is one of several extra patches I did not need to repair the quilt.
