Sashiko: Ginkgo Leaf

I used bright red thread on a deep red fabric to embroider this Ginkgo leaf in a technique known as Sashiko.

I created several dozens of red fabric patches embroidered with tints and tones of red thread to repair a vintage quilt. The quilt is solid red and quilted with red thread. This is one of several extra patches I did not need to repair the quilt.

This artwork is matted (white) and framed (black).
Fabric square = 4 x 4 inches
Frame = 8 x 8 inches

Sashiko originated in Japan as a way for poorer people to repair, and at the same time, embellish their garments. Sashiko embraces the philosophy of “no waste” and thriftiness.

The ginkgo leaf has been used extensively in Asian art but it is also valued around the world.  Most notably the ginkgo has been used as a symbol of peace, hope and vitality and also as a symbol of love and duality.
